Guest Post: New Year’s Resolutions for Small Business Owners

How can you reach the goals you’ve set out for your business in the New Year?

My best advice for business owners is based on how I make my own resolutions and how I got to where I am today. I do this every year.

Reflect on what you should do versus what you want to do. When we set goals for what we should do, they seldom get accomplished.

Set goals for what you want to do during the year.

“Ask and you shall receive.” Be specific:

  • Set an annual financial goal
  • Improve office environment
  • Set aside more time for family
  • Network more
  • Improve customer service

How will you accomplish your goals? I break each large goal into small “doable” goals. For example:

Determine annual financial goal: Take the annual goal and break it down to 50 weeks in the year. Each week meet your quota.

Improve Office Environment: Speak with your employees about how you can help them be more efficient, how can we all step up our game and be an A+ business. Send your employees to seminars and continued education to improve their job skills and help them grow professionally. Remember that if you invest in them, they will invest in you!

Make more time for family: Schedule it!! Mark your calendar for time with your family. Make it happen.
Network more: Schedule two hours a week to reach out to colleagues. Networking builds relationships and creates client referrals.

Improve Customer Service: Follow the 24-hour rule. Call your clients back. Communicate with them. Are they your walking billboard? Give them a service worth talking about. It has been proven that providing excellent customer service will increase revenue by 25%!
